Neighborhoods

SCBD and Senopati

$610 to $945 a month

Central, polished, walkable pockets, close to offices, nightlife, and the MRT. Rent range is Grey's SCBD and Sudirman one bedroom figure; Senopati is not priced separately in our sources.

Tradeoff: Corporate-feeling, priciest per square meter.

Kemang

$445 to $780 a month

The classic creative and nomad pocket in South Jakarta: cafes, brunch spots, villa compounds, garden apartments.

Tradeoff: Traffic on Jalan Kemang Raya is heavy; commutes to SCBD can run 45 to 70 minutes at peak.

Menteng

$550 to $800 for a studio

Historic, leafy, embassy district in Central Jakarta. Quieter and calmer than SCBD.

Tradeoff: Fewer nightlife and coworking options on the doorstep.

East and North Jakarta

$85 to $220 a month

Kos rooms and studios for budget nomads wanting a local experience.

Tradeoff: Far from the main expat and coworking hubs of South Jakarta.

Day trips

In the city, the old town and the Monas park area are easy half days. Bogor sits about 36 miles away and Bandung about 108 miles away (Numbeo distances). Check current rail and road times before you plan, since traffic changes everything.

Friction factors

Internet reliability, 7 out of 10. Fiber of 20 to 100 Mbps for IDR 250,000 to 600,000 a month is reliable in modern apartments and coworking spaces (Grey), but speeds vary by building.
Getting around, 3 out of 10. Jakarta is not walkable and traffic is the most cited downside (Grey, Jobicy); the U.S. State Department notes aggressive and unpredictable driving.
Cards and banking, 6 out of 10. Card skimming is common according to the State Department, so use ATMs inside major bank branches; bank conversion margins of 2 to 4 percent are cited by Grey, which sells a competing product.

Honest friction, month three

By month three the novelty of cheap food has faded and the real costs show up. Many landlords ask for 12 months of rent up front, which means a big first outlay and little flexibility if the city is not for you. Service charges are often quoted separately from rent. Air quality is generally poor, flooding is the most common weather disaster in the rainy season (roughly November to March or April), and Jakarta is sinking, which makes floods worse. The State Department rates Indonesia Level 2, exercise increased caution, for natural disasters, unrest, and terrorism. Indonesia's criminal code, effective January 2026, penalizes cohabitation and sex outside marriage when a family member files a complaint, which matters for couples. And the tax question will not go away.

Honest opinion

Jakarta is the best value big city in Asia for a USD earner who can handle chaos, and the worst fit for someone who wants easy walkable days. The savings are real, but the visa income bar and the tax residency question mean it is not a casual stop. If you earn $60,000 or more and you can plan around traffic and the 12 month rent habit, it deserves a serious look. If you would rather decide in a month than a year, try a shorter stay first.

Trivia answer

B. Under the Indonesian rules summarized by PwC, you are a tax resident if you reside in Indonesia, are present more than 183 days in any 12 month period, or are present in a fiscal year and intend to reside there.
